What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common of the arthritis conditions. It is a degenerative bone disease which many people in Camden and Cherry Hill suffer from. The condition of osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage wears away and leaves the bones that would be under that cartilage to rub together causing pain, loss of range of motion in the joint, and swelling. Osteoarthritis can sometimes come on slowly to some people actually taking years to become extremely painful. Other times it will come on quickly.
The actual cause of osteoarthritis is not known but there are some things that are common among the people that have osteoarthritis such as:
- Being obese or overweight which places additional stress on the joints
- Age plays a factor as there is wear and tear on joints with age
- Injury to the joints through sports activities, or certain types of jobs such as manual labor
- Unbalanced joints which can be caused by injury or can be hereditary
- A hereditary defect in the joint which may be a deformity
- Activities such as sports and work that cause stress to the joints
Some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis are: stiffness when getting out of bed in the morning and inability to move for a while; or stiffness or swelling of the joints after sitting or standing for any amount of time; joint swelling for any other reason such as humidity; and the sound of grinding, or a popping sensation when the joint is moved. The range of motion is also affected and often the deteriorated joint will often cause the patient to fall often. The joint specialists at the Atlantic Spine and Joint Institute are highly skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis and will be able to determine the best treatment protocol for you. If you live in Haddon Township or the surrounding areas of Camden or Cherry Hill, it is recommended that you make an appointment to receive a proper evaluation and diagnoses.
Viscosupplementation therapy is one option to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis. Viscosupplementation therapy uses a gelatinous substance that is injected into the joint in order to replace the synovial fluids. This can be a long term relief therapy and is highly recommended.
The most common form of osteoarthritis is found in the knee. Osteoarthritis is a global affliction. There are twenty one million people suffering from osteoarthritis in the United States and most of these are osteoarthritis of the knee. If you are one of the twenty one million that are suffering from osteoarthritis, we suggest you see your doctor or healthcare professional to get a diagnosis and a solution in how to relieve the pain. You may want to talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about one or the other of the aforementioned therapy options to gain relief from the pain of osteoarthritis.
Once you have had a diagnosis, and a solution has been offered; then it is up to you to determine if your pain is strong enough to warrant proceeding with one or the other of the therapies. If you decide to go ahead then check with your insurance carrier to be sure that the therapies will be covered by your insurance; then check with your doctor or healthcare professional to be sure that they accept your insurance. Both of these procedures are covered by Medicare. Once the legalities are over, you can rest assured that everything else will go along smoothly and quickly and you will finally have relief from the pain of osteoarthritis.
